“OUR HANDS, OUR FUTURE!” –even better than silver & gold

“Wet your hands with cleanrunning water (warm or cold),turn off the tap (or stop the source of water)and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.”

WOMAN KNOW THYSELF TO SAFEGUARD OUR FUTURE

What better time to talk about women’s health than the month for BREAST CANCER AWARENESS. As we celebrate women under the theme “BE BOLD FOR CHANGE” and our country also goes through positive change, we need our women more than ever and this change must start from within; A Healthy Body is an excellent start point!!!!

MAKING BREASTS COME ALIVE

This year October, the month for BREAST CANCER AWARENESS seems to have “arrived” faster than ever. Didn’t we just celebrate New Year’s Day and it feels like yesterday when we changed Governments.

IN THE INTEREST OF OUR HEARTS

World Heart Day is here with us again and we continue to write while others read. Many of us talk and some people may listen. A lucky few even have an opportunity to do a few tests to determine the health status of their hearts BUT the majority of people continue with business as usual. Unfortunately business as usual for most of us is torture to our hearts.

THE ROAD TO HEART HEALTH

It is ninth month once again and on 29th September the world will celebrate World Heart Day. Over the next three weeks we will refresh our memory with the basics of heart health, starting with 2016 World Heart Day theme.

MAN KNOW THYSELF – Essential screening for men

One of the points stressed on in my Ten Commandments for a Healthy and Enjoyable life is to do REGULAR MEDICAL CHECKS OR SCREENING. This point can never be overemphasized. The hospital is not only for the sick. No matter how much of a healthy life you lead, you could still have a grave medical condition lurking in the shadows and only an early screening could nip it right in the bud.

WHERE DO BROKEN HEARTS GO?

Writing may have a way of keeping my pain away for a brief moment but it all rushes back totally overwhelming me, but I choose not to freeze. Not too many people regard their parents as role models or mentors throughout their lives.

My dad is definitely an ANGEL and I had to lend him to God a few days ago. I am sure he will as always make God proud.

CHOLESTEROL: 10 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

The waxy fat-like substance we refer to us “cholesterol” definitely has its good sides but we tend to focus mainly on its “ugly” side maybe for good reason; it is an invisible killer and may creep up on you without warning. No one likes to fight an opponent he or she cannot see.

Cerebral Palsy – The Nutrition Therapy Bit!

Sometime ago, I joined a group of other health personnels in offering healthcare services to parents and their Children With Special Needs (CWSN). The experience provoked an interest and thus the instinct to be more involved in a management of families with nutritional challenges related to the special needs child.

This is what my little search revealed about one group of CWSN (Cerebral Palsy)…

COCOA – GREAT FOR YOUR MOOD, EXCELLENT FOR YOUR HEALTH

I am still trying to find a good reason why patronage of cocoa products especially the pure cocoa beverage is much lower than expected. Every year I spend several weeks educating people about the benefits of cocoa and I believe this is not in vain.

Long before oil was discovered in commercial quantities in Ghana, Cocoa faithfully provided us not only with money but fame as well since we have always remained a major exporter of cocoa. Little wonder that in some countries chocolate made from Ghana’s premium cocoa is highly desired and costs an arm and a leg.

NAUSEA: Basics we all need to know

Nausea is a very common complaint and almost everyone experiences this sometime in their life. It is an experience that occurs with the feeling that you are about to vomit. When you are nauseated you may feel weak, sweaty and have too much saliva in your mouth. You may even vomit. Pregnancy, illness and motion sickness are among the long list of conditions that may cause nausea.

A “GUT FEELING” MAY MEAN MORE THAN YOU THINK

You surely have come across the phrase “go with your gut feeling” and many times we consider that to be our instincts, but the gut, which is the full path that swallowed food travels may be much smarter than we think. It has even been referred to as the “second brain” in some instances.

10 FACTS ABOUT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE WE SHOULD ALL KNOW

May 31st is WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY and I would normally be discussing SMOKING, another serial killer like high blood pressure but I just could not let go of high blood pressure. Next weekend we will do justice to smoking.

The fight against High Blood Pressure is simply one that we can’t afford to lose.

CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE NOW! – YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO IGNORE THIS

17th May as always marked World Hypertension Day and the day was set aside to increase awareness of a serial yet silent killer. That is exactly what Hypertension is; it is killing the young and old at an alarming rate yet in most instances people with high blood pressure may feel absolutely well.

HOW FATAL ARE THESE DISEASES?

There have been many challenges over the past few years and deciding on what in my opinion are the most fatal diseases is no walk in the park. I even considered financial/economic stress and DUMSOR stress but dropped them at the last minute. Maybe I should consider them again since they may be the root cause of many of the FATAL FIVE.  We could also make STRESS the sixth point and list all our troubles there.

IS IT SMART TO EXERCISE WHILE ILL?

Many of us may find it difficult to believe it, but there are people with flesh and blood who do not make any excuses to avoid exercising. I certainly wish I was in this unique category.

These exercise addicts and some professional athletes who think missing an exercise session will spell doom to their dreams will call you at the first glim of light to find out if it’s okay for them to exercise.

STOP SMOKING, SAVE LIVES

Tobacco in various forms has proved beyond all reasonable doubt to be a killing machine. Despite the information available, the Tobacco Industry continues to succeed by using manipulative tactics to attract both the young and the old

IS SLEEP OVER-RATED?

Many of us continue to have sleepless nights trying to find answers to 1001 questions that we are confronted with daily. Good sleep may not be the answer to all our health challenges but it certainly goes a long way to make us healthier, happier and more productive.

I had the privilege of posing some questions on sleep to Dr. Obo Addy who is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and alsoAmerican Clinical Neurophysiology Society.

He is also board certified in Sleep Medicine and Psychiatry with years of experience in managing sleep disorders. I am sure we will all benefit immensely from his responses.

WARNING! - EXERCISE OVERDOSE MAY BE HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH

Nothing compares to exercise in our quest to discover the fountain of youth but we must “use” with caution. We have often referred to exercise as the ''wonder-drug'' and that is no exaggeration but like all other medications too much of it may be harmful to our health. Always remember that MODERATION is key; just as too little may be of no benefit, too much may send you to your grave earlier.

DEBUNKING SOME OF OUR FAVORITE HEALTH MYTHS

Some beliefs are handed down generations during chats over meals, in barber’s shops and even in bars with people huddled over beer. Some of the health beliefs are even passed on by our trusted healthcare providers. Unfortunately as science gets “smarter” some of these myths are debunked.

Well it is about time that we take a close look at some health myths that have stood “the test of time” until now when they tread on shaky grounds.
