COCOA – GREAT FOR YOUR MOOD, EXCELLENT FOR YOUR HEALTH

I am still trying to find a good reason why patronage of cocoa products especially the pure cocoa beverage is much lower than expected. Every year I spend several weeks educating people about the benefits of cocoa and I believe this is not in vain.

Long before oil was discovered in commercial quantities in Ghana, Cocoa faithfully provided us not only with money but fame as well since we have always remained a major exporter of cocoa. Little wonder that in some countries chocolate made from Ghana’s premium cocoa is highly desired and costs an arm and a leg.

 
 
 
NAUSEA: Basics we all need to know

Nausea is a very common complaint and almost everyone experiences this sometime in their life. It is an experience that occurs with the feeling that you are about to vomit. When you are nauseated you may feel weak, sweaty and have too much saliva in your mouth. You may even vomit. Pregnancy, illness and motion sickness are among the long list of conditions that may cause nausea.

Nausea and vomiting are usually completely normal reactions but may also signal an underlying serious condition. They are often your body’s response to foreign substances or irritants. Your brain may signal the urge to vomit if you eat contaminated food or contract a stomach virus.

 
 
 
A “GUT FEELING” MAY MEAN MORE THAN YOU THINK

You surely have come across the phrase “go with your gut feeling” and many times we consider that to be our instincts, but the gut, which is the full path that swallowed food travels may be much smarter than we think. It has even been referred to as the “second brain” in some instances.

That uncomfortable feeling in your stomach when you are running late yet stuck in traffic, butterflies in your stomach when you meet that special someone or as you get ready for a critical presentation, and we can’t leave out the burning sensation in your chest when you realize you left out a whole examination question just five minutes to time. Our guts have a way of reflecting our moods or emotions sometimes long before we are aware of what is going on.

 
 
 
IS SLEEP OVER-RATED?

Many of us continue to have sleepless nights trying to find answers to 1001 questions that we are confronted with daily. Good sleep may not be the answer to all our health challenges but it certainly goes a long way to make us healthier, happier and more productive.

I had the privilege of posing some questions on sleep to Dr. Obo Addy who is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and alsoAmerican Clinical Neurophysiology Society.

Some beliefs are handed down generations during chats over meals, in barber’s shops and even in bars with people huddled over beer. Some of the health beliefs are even passed on by our trusted healthcare providers. Unfortunately as science gets “smarter” some of these myths are debunked.

There are a variety of elixirs and contraptions to help ease the horror including sits baths, frozen bags of peas and a little water bottle that you squirt on yourself while you pee.
